July 20, 2024. Misty Roberts, 43, mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, hosted a pool party at her home for her son's birthday. She provided alcohol to the teenage guests, including her son's 16-year-old friend. Throughout the party, Roberts wore an orange bikini and flirted openly with the teen. Photos shown at trial captured her standing close to him. Prosecutors called the images "lewd and lascivious."Roberts led the boy to a "bonus room" in her home and locked the door. Her own son looked through a crack in the window and saw his mother having sex with his best friend. He later told investigators: "They were having sex." Roberts' daughter testified she saw them "on top of each other." Her nephew said he saw them "doing stuff" on the couch.The 16-year-old victim testified he was heavily drunk, had vomited from alcohol, and Roberts flirted with him before taking him upstairs and having sex with him. He ejaculated inside her, raising pregnancy concerns.After the party, Roberts texted the victim's mother asking if she could be pregnant. She replied she was on birth control. Roberts sent a screenshot to friends who urged her to take Plan B. A DoorDash driver testified he delivered emergency contraception to her home. Roberts texted her ex-husband Duncan Clanton: "I messed up. And I respect you enough to tell you." The next morning, she confessed the encounter to him.Roberts instructed her children and nephew to lie about what they saw, texting: "Lie 'til you die." She texted a juvenile witness: "Please make sure he doesn't say anything please. I'm scared to death." Clanton testified she confessed directly to him despite maintaining innocence publicly.Roberts resigned as mayor July 27, 2024, five days after the party. She was arrested August 1, 2024 on charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile. She posted $75,000 bond. Roberts was the first woman elected mayor of DeRidder in 2018 and won re-election in 2022 with 60% of the vote.Trial began late February 2026. Defense attorney Adam Johnson admitted the photo of Roberts straddling the teen was "a real bad look" and argued "trying to be the cool parent in a divorce is stupid." The defense tried to exclude testimony about rumors of inappropriate behavior with Beauregard High School baseball team members.On March 4, 2026, the jury deliberated less than one hour: Guilty on both counts. Roberts sobbed audibly when the verdict was read. She faces up to 17 years in prison (10 years for carnal knowledge, 7 for indecent behavior) and must register as a Tier 1 sex offender. Her attorney Todd Clemons said: "At this particular point, there's no apology that I'm gonna give on her behalf." Roberts maintains innocence and plans to appeal. Sentencing April 17, 2026.In October 2024, her brother Brandon Lee Roberts, 40, pleaded guilty to raping an underage girl and young woman.
