As the school gates close for summer, the temptation is to spend July and August formatted for inspection. The whisper of old inspection anxiety tempts us to dress up a performance, but under the renewed framework, the focus has fundamentally shifted from verdicts to conversations.
In this first short, sharp mini-episode, Jacqui and Jane name the elephant in the room: The Inclusive Mainstream Fund (IMF). If personal wellbeing simply acts as a plaster, the leader eventually absorbs the structural strain. We explore how to treat inclusion as a structural reality rather than an individual burden moving away from 5-step checklists to test your school's actual, lived coherence.
The Statutory Deadline: By December 31st, 2026, every mainstream state school in England must publish a formal inclusion strategy on their website.
Map Against the 7 DfE Inclusion Themes: Ensure your plan explicitly demonstrates ambitious leadership, early intervention, adaptive teaching, enrichment, culture/belonging, family partnerships, and accessible environments.
Universal Evidence-Based Provision First: Allocate funds into scalable, whole-school interventions (e.g., speech & language screening, neuroinclusion training) before barriers escalate.
Know Strict Spending Boundaries: IMF cannot subsidize operational deficits, general running costs, pre-existing activities, or capital building works.
Educate Governing Bodies: Shift governor questioning from "where is the money going?" to "how is this directly reducing barriers to attendance and achievement for vulnerable cohorts?"
Under the renewed framework, inspectors aren't sitting in offices reading paperwork they are shadowing specific pupils step-by-step to see how systems adapt from lesson to lesson.
Cognitive Isolation vs. Inclusion: If a SEND pupil is sitting at the back of a mainstream classroom doing a simplified worksheet while a TA does the thinking, that isn't inclusion it’s physical integration with cognitive isolation. Unstructured inclusion relies on individual teachers adapting on the fly with no cognitive load relief, leading directly to burnout.
Take these non-judgmental diagnostic questions to your leadership team to test your system’s coherence:
On Funding: How does your published strategy explicitly prove that your IMF allocation is directly reducing daily barriers for current cohorts rather than absorbing historic budget deficits?
On Authority: When your SENCo/Inclusion Lead identifies a systemic weakness in classroom adaptations, what formal, non-negotiable mechanism exists for them to challenge and upskill staff?
On Inclusion Bases: How do you track that pupils in an inclusion base spend meaningful time with mainstream peers—is the base a revolving door back to the classroom or a permanent parallel school?
On Pupil Experience: When inspectors sit next to your most vulnerable children, will their lived answers about feedback, help, and learning match your SEND policy?
Do not spend your summer creating folders for Ofsted. Focus on building psychological safety for staff, clarifying systems, and protecting your own headspace.
