  • Ep 26: Stop Motion: "Mad God" (2021) & "The Wolf House" (2018)
    2025/09/11

This week, we are exploring the creepy side of stop motion. While we've talked about Fantastic Mr. Fox on the podcast before, stop motion can also be an avenue for artists and filmmakers to explore the creepier side of things. For example, Phil Tippet (the mastermind stop motion animator behind RoboCop, Star Wars, and Starship Troopers) worked for 30 years on his passion project, "Mad God", which is a grotesque, dialogue-free, atmosphere-rich, insane world.

From Chile, we also watched "The Wolf House", which is equally unique (or perhaps moreso), by how it utilizes multiple media (paint, papier-mâché, etc) and how it is animated. Both of these movies are incredible works of art that you've certainly never seen anything like before. Watch with us this week, and remember to mind your movies!

  • Ep 25.5: "Caught Stealing" (2025)
    2025/09/04

This week, we are talking about Darren Aronofsky's newest addition to his filmography, "Caught Stealing". For this episode, we had the chance to record in person immediately after seeing this in theaters. As is tradition for Aronofsky, "Caught Stealing" takes place in NYC, but this is a more crowd-pleasing movie than his previous films, which are great but dark movies. Here, he seems to be aiming at a more accessible movie that anyone can enjoy. While we do a brief no-spoilers section, we strongly recommend this one and dive into spoilers so that we can talk about the gritty, late 90s, NYC, "After Hours"-inspired film in full.

  • Ep 25: Bottom 250 Letterboxd: War of the Worlds (2025) & Cats (2019)
    2025/08/28

Despite our screens being bombarded with semi-human singing cats, poorly CGI'ed alien tripods, and a terrifying amount of Amazon product placement, we survived watching our picks for the lowest-rated movies on Letterboxd. Ice Cube's phoned-in performance and the poor decision to use motion-capture CGI for anthropomorphic cats are just the beginning of the issues with these two movies. Of course, there are some laughs and some standouts in this mix here (looking at you, Taylor Swift), but overall the experiences that these movies offer are not quite worth your time.

Of course, before jumping into our main features, we talk briefly about some movies we have seen recently, such as Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan", Steven Spielberg's "E.T.", and the absurd "Scary Movie". As for the feature films this week, whether you've suffered through these cinematic bruises or not, join us this week as we break down the bad, the worse, and the ugliest of these two flicks!

  • Ep 24.5: "Weapons" (2025)
    2025/08/21

Zach Cregger's newest addition to what we consider the horror genre is an absolute blast! Weapons is full of tension, scares, themes, and laughs, and we wholeheartedly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. We talk briefly about the movie as a whole without any spoilers for the first bit of this episode, and then transition to a spoiler-heavy conversation to dive deep into the film in all of its glory. From its mystery, its characters, its storytelling, and its enjoyment factor, we look at every aspect of the film and discuss its place among recent additions to the horror genre, such as "Together" with Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance" that received some love during the Oscars last year. Weapons is an excellent original concept, and we are looking forward to Cregger's next steps into the world of cinema! (Resident Evil, here we come!).

  • Ep 24: Parodies: The Naked Gun (2025) & Black Dynamite (2009)
    2025/08/14

Good parody movies can be hard to find, but we've found some of the funniest ones to talk about on this week's episode! This week we are looking at a faithful return to form for David Zucker and Leslie Nielsen's "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad" (1988), with Akiva Schaffer's 2025 "The Naked Gun" starring Liam Neeson, and a cult classic parody on the blaxploitation subgenre in Scott Sanders' dynamic "Black Dynamite" (2009) starring Michael Jai White! Both of these films are packed with nonstop laughter, and we enjoy quite a discussion on their cultural relevance, the hopeful rise of comedies, and the parody genre in general.

Before we jump into our main features, we give some love to the new Zach Cregger film, "Weapons", and the new Michael Shanks release, "Together", starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, among other recent watches. But, at the end of our episode, we lock in our picks for our next full episode on "Letterboxd's Bottom 250"...

So, join us as we unravel the conspiracy behind how these two movies are nefariously connected, address the controversy surrounding the crane cast in Schaffer's new film, and explore the lowest depths of Letterboxd's most hated movies. And remember to mind your movies!

  • Ep 23.5: Top 5 Female-Directed Movies
    2025/08/07

From the French New Wave's great Agnes Varda to today's Coralie Fargeat, female directors have long been an under-highlighted and incredibly important piece of cinema. Even as far as 1895, Alice Guy-Blaché was a pioneer filmmaker and one of the, if not the, first narrative directors of all time. Today, Ryan and Shane each picked out five of their favorite female-directed movies to recommend to you! Join us as we explore historical and contemporary visionaries in film, and don't forget to tell us what we missed.

  • Ep 23: New York City: "Do the Right Thing" (1989) & "After Hours" (1985)
    2025/07/31

New York City has long been an iconic location with its diverse neighborhoods and its fame as America's largest city. This week, we explore two iconic masterpieces made in the "Big Apple", watching Spike Lee deliver pizza on a scorching hot day in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and Griffin Dunne get lost in a nightmarish string of coincidences in SoHo, Manhattan. Join us this week for Spike Lee's seminal "Do the Right Thing" and Martin Scorsese's underappreciated masterpiece "After Hours". Before we break into our main discussion, we discuss some of the movies we've seen recently, including the new "Fantastic Four: First Steps", "Smile 2", and Ari Aster's controversial "Eddington".
