Message From the Margins is a weekly podcast and video series hosted by Father Rich Vitale, an Old Catholic priest, writer, pastor, and public theologian. Each episode explores the places where Scripture, theology, psychology, culture, history, and lived experience meet. Some episodes examine the questions Christians have argued about for centuries. Others take on the questions people are quietly carrying right now. The goal is neither easy answers nor religious outrage. It is an intelligent, honest conversation with a pastor who believes faith should be able to survive difficult questions. If you are spiritually serious, religiously curious, wounded by the Church, trying to make sense of Christianity, or simply looking for a more thoughtful way to talk about faith and public life, you are welcome here.2026 キリスト教 スピリチュアリティ 哲学 社会科学 聖職・福音主義

  • How Did the Church Become the Church?
    2026/08/31

How did a movement become an assembly, and how did an assembly become the Church?

About eighty years after the crucifixion of Jesus, the Roman governor Pliny the Younger had two enslaved Christian women tortured because he believed their bodies might reveal the movement's secrets. History did not preserve their names. It preserved the question their lives leave behind.

In Episode II of Message From the Margins, Father Rich Vitale traces the Church from Jesus and the first disciples through the end of the second century. We enter the homes where Christians gathered, follow the people who carried letters across the Roman world, and discover how worship, leadership, care for the vulnerable, apostolic memory, and plain old human logistics became durable enough to survive another generation.

Along the way, we meet Peter and Paul, Prisca and Phoebe, the neglected widows of Acts, the traveling ministers of the Didache, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus of Lyons. We also visit the Catacombs of Priscilla and ask what the Church's earliest structures were actually trying to protect.

Then, in Queries From the Margins, Father Rich answers four listener questions:

    • Does God lead us into temptation?
    • How can we discern God's will from our own desires?
    • Is cremation compatible with Christian belief in the resurrection of the body?
    • Where did the Old Catholic Church come from?

The Church did not arrive in history as a finished institution. Its structures developed as Christians learned how to remember Jesus, worship together, preserve truthful teaching, and care for people who could easily be overlooked.

  • HOW DID THE BIBLE BECOME THE BIBLE?
    2026/08/17

Most of us grew up with the Bible as a finished object: one book, bound between two covers, divided neatly into chapters and verses.

But the earliest Christians never held anything like that.

The Bible began as stories told aloud, prayers, laws, songs, prophetic writings, letters carried between communities, gospels copied by hand, scrolls, codices, arguments, and collections that developed across centuries.

So how did all of that become the Bible?

In the first episode of Message From the Margins, Father Rich Vitale traces the extraordinary human history behind the Christian Scriptures, from oral tradition and ancient scribes to Marcion, Irenaeus, Eusebius, Constantine, Nicaea, Athanasius, and the different biblical canons Christians still use today.

Along the way, we ask a deeper question: If the Bible came to us through so many human hands, what does that mean for the way we understand inspiration, tradition, and the work of the Holy Spirit?

The episode concludes with Queries From the Margins, where Father Rich responds to listener questions about faith, sexuality, anger, returning to church, and confession.
