Mercy is expensive, and that’s exactly why it can set you free. We camp out in Proverbs 11:17 and get painfully practical about what it means when Scripture says “the merciful man does himself good.” Because sometimes you forgive, you mean it, you obey God, and years later you still feel the sting. So is the proverb wrong, or have we misunderstood what “good” is actually promising?

We walk through the Hebrew ideas behind the verse, from hesed (covenant loyal love) to the picture of “dealing well with your own soul,” and we contrast it with cruelty that doesn’t stay contained but stirs trouble into your own flesh and blood.
