Selmer, Tennessee, the county seat of McNairy County with roughly four thousand residents, had been hit before. On the afternoon of December 9, 2023, it happened again. This episode reconstructs the EF-3 tornado that formed after a 2:15 PM warning placed a dangerous storm near Hornsby, moving northeast at forty-five miles per hour beneath a sky witnesses described as bruised green. A funnel cloud was reported east of Hornsby at 2:19 PM, and by 2:27 PM the tornado, half a mile wide, entered the northern edge of Selmer. The official survey recorded peak winds around 160 miles per hour along an 11.8-mile path stretching from west-southwest of Selmer to east-northeast of Olivehill, with one home swept completely away. The documentary examines fourteen minutes of destruction on a Saturday afternoon and the harder questions it left behind, in a town with no public storm shelter and a rural warning system stretched thin.
