  • Stop shouting at your audience: why the propaganda model of selling is dead
    2026/02/11

If selling makes you uncomfortable — if the word "salesman" makes you cringe, or if you feel a little bit of shame every time you hit send on a promotional email — you're not imagining things.

That discomfort was engineered. Literally. In a boardroom over a hundred years ago.

In this episode of Master the Inbox, I'm taking you back to World War I, when a wartime propaganda machine accidentally created the modern idea of "selling" — and why that outdated, broken model is still destroying your ability to actually connect with people today.

You'll hear the story of George Creel's Committee on Public Information, the 75,000 "Four-Minute Men" who delivered scripted speeches to captive audiences in movie theaters, and how Edward Bernays (Sigmund Freud's nephew) took those same tactics and rebranded them as "public relations" — using psychology to sell cigarettes as "torches of freedom" and engineer the American breakfast.

These aren't just interesting historical footnotes. This is the blueprint we've all inherited. And it's the reason selling feels like warfare instead of service.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why we've been conditioned to view selling as a one-way blast of information designed to conquer minds
    • How the "Four-Minute Men" of WWI created the modern sales monologue (and why it worked then but fails now)
    • The difference between propaganda (which exploits your needs to help the seller) and persuasion (which addresses your needs to help you)
    • Why your audience has developed "thick protective armor" against being sold to — and how to get past it
    • What it actually means to sell as a conversation, not a monologue (with real examples from my client work)
    • How to write emails that feel like letters from a trusted advisor, not a carnival barker
    • Why respecting the "no" is one of the most powerful things you can do for your business

If you've ever felt icky about promoting your course, if you've hesitated before sending a sales email, or if you've wondered why your audience isn't responding to your offers — this episode will give you context for that resistance and a completely different path forward.

  • Your sales funnel isn't a tech problem, it's a conversation problem
    2026/02/04

If you've been treating your sales funnel like a tech problem — obsessing over pages, buttons, email sequences, and automation triggers — you've missed the entire point.

Funnels aren't about software and they never were. In this episode of Master the Inbox, I take you on a journey from 1898 Philadelphia (where the AIDA framework was born) to a potato field in Idaho, to a movie theater concession stand in Chicago — to show you what funnels actually are: decision architecture.

The best funnels I've seen are not designed to simply extract money. They're designed to reduce the cognitive load of saying yes and guide people through a conversation, not a sales pitch. And they work because they're helpful — not because they're clever.

    You'll learn:

    • Why Elias St. Elmo Lewis's 1898 framework still matters (and where modern marketers lost the plot)
    • The real reason Russell Brunson's potato gun funnel worked — and it wasn't the upsell
    • How movie theater popcorn sizes reveal the psychology of friction in decision-making
    • Why most course creators are asking for one giant, high-pressure decision (and leaving money on the table)
    • What the grocery store checkout line teaches us about cognitive load and buying mode
    • How to structure order bumps and upsells as helpful next steps, not aggressive add-ons
    • Why your squeeze page sets the tone for your entire funnel (and how most people get this wrong)

If you've been building funnels and they're just not converting — this episode will help you see where the breakdown is happening. And it's probably not where you think.

  • How to sell your course more often without launches or discounts
    2026/01/28

If most of your course revenue comes from just a few moments a year — launches and Black Friday — you’re not alone.

For a lot of course creators, selling outside those windows feels awkward, uncomfortable, or like something you should avoid… because the only selling models you’ve ever seen are built around novelty, urgency, or discounts.

In this episode of Master the Inbox, I introduce one of the most essential parts of my customer-centric framework: problem-based promotions — a way to sell more often without burning out your list or relying on “doors are open” and “last chance” energy.

You’ll learn why launch-only and discount-only selling quietly trains your audience to wait… and how to shift into promotions that feel relevant, timely, and genuinely helpful.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why relying on launches + Black Friday teaches your audience when your course “matters”
    • How meaning is shaped by when you sell — not just what you say
    • Why most courses aren’t overpriced — they’re undersold
    • What “problem-based promotion” actually means (and what it’s not)
    • How to anchor the same course in different contexts throughout the year so it stays relevant

If you’ve ever wondered, “How do I sell more often without feeling pushy?” this episode will give you a clearer, calmer way forward — one that treats selling as an ongoing conversation, not a high-pressure event.
