- At 7:15 a.m. Denise Hughes saw a fully inflated orange commercial survival suit standing between rocks and called the sheriff at 7:41 a.m.
- The Nellie Rae departed Ardmore at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, bound ~40 miles offshore with an estimated return Monday the 11th before dark.
- A wave knocked Luis Bernal overboard around 8:30 p.m. Sunday; the EPIRB activated at 9:17 p.m.
- At 9:22 p.m. the vessel sent a four-second transmission on channel 16 with the two words "Pelican Bar," then silence.
- Harbormaster Carl Jeffries found and reviewed the overnight recording Monday morning and brought it to rescue coordinator Alan Powell at 8:47 a.m.
