Malveaux: The Room is built around one belief: most people never get the space to say what they actually think. Hosted by Jonathan Malveaux, the show brings together artists, athletes, founders, chefs, investors, civic leaders, and cultural architects for long-form, trust-based conversations with people who have lived something worth understanding. The show exists for anyone tired of the polished version: the résumé, the headline, the approved quote. It is about everything underneath that. What did it really cost? What went wrong? What did the public never see? Jon has spent more than 30 years moving between New York and Tokyo, finance and culture, boardrooms and backstage. His own life was never as smooth as it looked on paper, and that shapes the way he listens. This is not PR. It is a room where the real story finally has space to be heard. Now you are in the room.© 2026 Jonathan Malveaux

  • Noboru Arai: Built from Nothing | Michelin ★★ HOMMAGE, Asakusa //
    2026/08/17
Noboru Arai is already operating in rarefied air. Two Michelin stars in Tokyo. HOMMAGE in Asakusa. His wife, Mayuka, earned Michelin's first Service Award in Japan. No major restaurant group. No corporate machine. And almost none of it was supposed to happen. At 15, Arai decided three years of high school were three years he could spend getting ahead in a kitchen. At 16, he entered one. He had never been praised before. Then somebody told him he was doing well. Years later, his path collapsed. He found Régis Marcon in a magazine, tore the corner from a notebook, wrote one sentence in French, and put it in the hands of one of the chefs he idolized. That piece of paper took him to France. At 26, Arai bet everything on HOMMAGE. His father put the family home on the line so he could borrow ¥12 million. Building the restaurant meant destroying the family's kitchen. For nearly eight years, they cooked dinner at home on cassette stoves. Then HOMMAGE was doing ¥700,000 a month. Arai thought about selling bento to survive. His parents told him: Do not make bento. Make your cooking better. He did. Anna Nogami and I sat with Arai for two hours. We talked about what happens when nobody sees what you see in yourself. What it means when failure puts your family's home at risk. Why HOMMAGE is not one man's restaurant. Why "simple" is not subtraction. Why meeting Chef Yusuke Takada made everything Arai had built suddenly feel old. And why, after all of this, he still says: "I don't think I'm successful." This is not really a conversation about Michelin stars. It is about what conviction looks like before there is any evidence you are right. Arai has a name for it: Baseless confidence. At 26, there was no reason to believe any of this would work. He stepped forward anyway. Chef Noboru Arai in Malveaux: The Room. • Jonas Olsson: 40 Years. No Regrets. | The Man Who Took H&M Global 40年。
    2026/07/16
Jonas Olsson joined H&M in 1988, when the company was still operating in six countries. He stayed for nearly 40 years. In that time, he helped take H&M from a Swedish retailer into one of the most recognized fashion retailers in the world. Germany went from 23 stores to more than 400. Austria was built from zero. Japan began with almost nothing: a lease contract, a hotel room, and one man trying to open a market where the brand had no infrastructure. On opening day in Ginza, 7,000 people stood in line. Television crews rented the restaurant across the street and broadcast live for 24 hours. The line did not disappear after the cameras left. It lasted for months. That would be enough for most people. But the reason this conversation matters is not that Jonas helped build stores. It is that he kept putting himself in rooms where failure was possible, visible, and expensive. He was a CFO who thought like a creative. 51% creative. 49% structured. Because the left brain always wins if you let it. That may sound simple. It is not. But this conversation is not really about retail. It is about a boy from working-class Malmö, raised by a single mother, who became a national team wrestler, survived being buried alive in a cave at 11 years old, and somehow carried that same refusal to quit into every country, every opening, every crisis, and every private loss that came after. It is about a man who lost his wife while running operations across continents, then moved to Japan as a single father with a teenage daughter, no Japanese, and no real safety net. When I asked him whether he regretted it, he did not pause. No. Never. Never. I met Jonas almost 20 years ago on a delayed flight from Tokyo to Seoul. I was carrying a Ziploc bag full of phones from different countries. He was quietly building H&M across Asia. We stayed in touch. We became friends. But we never had this conversation. Not like this. He says things in this episode I do not think he has said publicly before. The last ten minutes are some of the most honest minutes we have recorded. This is not a victory lap. It is what happens when 40 years finally speaks for itself. Episode 02. This episode is an independent editorial conversation. It was not produced by, sponsored by, endorsed by, or created in partnership with H&M, H&M Group, Ikea, or any other company or brand mentioned.

  • Yusuke Takada: #1 Restaurant in Japan | Craft Before Fame // 高田裕介:日本No.1に選ばれたレストラン 「名声よりも技術」
    2026/06/18
Yusuke Takada is the Chef and Owner of La Cime in Osaka — the #1 ranked restaurant in Japan. But the struggle and the journey are more interesting than the ranking. He grew up on a remote island of 5,000 people. Cable television opened his eyes to the world. MTV and hip-hop. Iron Chef and cooking. He fell in love with music and DJing, and has not stopped moving since. He left home at 14. Went to Paris at 29 with no connections, no French, and a family waiting at home. Rode a bicycle through the streets of Osaka handing out flyers himself, convinced he could build something extraordinary if he stayed true to the work. No PR firm. No restaurant group. No shortcuts. No happy hugs. He doesn't put himself out there much. But he's paying attention. To culture. To craft. To what's working and what isn't. And unlike most people, he's willing to say what he actually thinks. Anna Nogami and I spent nearly two hours talking with him about all of it. The years before anyone was paying attention. The difference between mastery and popularity. Why Japan's culinary system is falling behind. What it actually takes to compete globally. The difference between a cook and a chef. Why a reservation list is not a credential. And how a smell from a frigid night in Manhattan can become a dish months later in Osaka. He's fiercely proud of Japan. Honest about what it's missing. And completely unafraid to say so. At one point I asked what comes next. He said he wants to do something no Japanese person would try. He didn't elaborate. I didn't push. Some things are more interesting left unfinished. This is the most open conversation I've ever had with him. And Episode 1 of The Room. 00:03:15 5,000 People and a Sea Out Front / 5000人と目の前の海 00:06:01 Iron Chef Changed Everything / 料理の鉄人がすべてを変えた 00:09:16 I Left.
