When I had a Black producer tell me my sophisticated love story was unrealistic because it didn't include a knife fight, I became very disillusioned. He was a gatekeeper and now I know how he got to a deal at Warner Bros. Our meeting was on that lot. I interned there a few years prior, and that's when I got my clue that these people weren't creative, but they were the execs in charge.

The gatekeepers have been very selective, and over the last 30 years, we have seen them narrow their focus to slave movies and period pieces, and now I know that's been on purpose.

I studied film and planned to be a screenwriter. Added director when I realized I would have more control of my work if I also directed it. However, it never occurred to me that it wasn't a meritocracy - that successful film careers weren't built solely on talent and lucky breaks. And the gatekeepers...I didn't realize that this was a design. I know it sounds conspiratorial but I can see the pattern now.
