After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, King turned his attention to economic justice. He called for a guaranteed income, massive federal investment to abolish poverty, and a redistribution of economic power in the richest nation on earth. In 1968, he launched the Poor People’s Campaign, a multiracial movement demanding an Economic Bill of Rights — not symbolic recognition, but material change.

That fight never reached completion.

This video examines the part of MLK’s legacy rarely discussed on MLK Day: the economic agenda that was abandoned after his death, and how America chose to remember a safer version of King instead.
