2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:2–3

I. The Assurance of Love

• The believer will grow in his/her love for God and for other believers, for those who also “have been born of Him”

II. The Orders of Love

• Martin Luther's Bondage of the Will: “For if there be nothing by which we are justified but faith only, it is evident that those who are not of faith, are not justified. And if they be not justified, they are sinners. And if they be sinners, they are evil trees and can do nothing but sin and bring forth evil fruit—Wherefore, "Free-will" is nothing but the servant of sin, of death, and of Satan, doing nothing, and being able to do or attempt nothing, but evil!”

III. Love According to Christ

• Both God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord define love (man’s true love) almost exclusively as obedience to Their commandments.
