  • Is Our Brain Wired to BLOCK Creativity? How We Kill Creativity | Saskia Wheeler, Neuroscience Expert
    2025/08/14

We're told creativity is just for artists, but neuroscience reveals it's essential for problem-solving, mental health, and human flourishing. So why do modern environments and habits systematically shut down our creative networks? What's really happening in our brains when we create—and how can we redesign our lives to unlock it?

👉 Find the full playlist of episodes HERE: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO6l9CNQoSFdYrSofAAHBcTdsnpYk8iYg

Saskia Wheeler is a science communicator specializing in neuroscience as applied to mental wellbeing. She translates neuroscience research into practical, human-centered tools that support healthier minds and environments. At Kyan Health, she collaborates with organizations to foster cultures emphasizing psychological safety, collective resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

Her academic background combines Neuroaesthetics and Creativity (MSc, Goldsmiths) with Philosophy of Mind and Aesthetics (MA, Trinity College Dublin), bridging neuroscience, design, and human experience to apply science-led strategies in workplace wellbeing and environmental influence on cognition, emotion, and performance.

    Today, expect to learn:

    • What the three brain networks involved in creativity actually do and why they rarely work together

    • Why creative people have "attenuated latent inhibition" and can't filter out irrelevant information like others

    • How this relates to ADHD and why neurodivergent minds often show enhanced creativity

    • Why survival mode brain states completely shut down creative thinking• How AI tools might be rewiring our brains in concerning ways by reducing cognitive effort

    • What "neuroaesthetics" reveals about how our physical environment affects our mental state

    • Practical methods to regulate your nervous system and shift from survival to creation mode

    • How psychological safety helps you to better regulate emotions and how that can support better creativity

    • How to redesign your environment and habits to support your brain's creative networks

REINTRODUCING: The Lost and Searching Podcast with Seven Jacobs

When I was young, I faced challenges like rough sleeping, family loss, poverty, and neglect. I was left feeling that if I hadn’t been around, life wouldn’t be so hard for everyone around me. This started a long journey of loss, loneliness, and confusion. I felt an intense desire to make the world a better place, but my inner conflict only allowed my anger to come out into the world, and none of the impact I wanted.

Then as a teenager, I dropped out of university to get into entrepreneurship. Despite intense social anxiety, something pulled me to create my own future. And for a long time, I failed at that. I spent almost a decade doing nothing but failing. Again, feeling lost, searching for answers, and never feeling good enough.

Over the years I co-founded 4 businesses, built 3 communities of thousands, and worked with some of the world’s biggest companies. Slowly improving, I built proof that I could do and be better. I became obsessed with psychology and philosophy, to try to support myself and those around me.

My energy and impact started improving, and an important realisation dawned on me: We are all leaders.

    That includes you.

The goal of this show is to help you discover and cultivate the version of yourself that you want to be more of. Anything to do with any important aspect of life, the world, humanity, and self-leadership can be expected here.

The world is going through a tough time right now, and many are feeling lost in life and are searching for answers. But I don’t want anyone to feel left behind like I once did.

Instead, I want everyone to feel energised and alive. By finding direction and understanding what it really means to be a leader, we can change our lives radically for the better. (Or so I believe). My dedication is to ensuring you’re as empowered, aware, and effective in life as possible, in discovery of your purpose, place, and potential.

The show is NOT just an interview with a guest. It’s a conversation, where our episodes are deep talks to answer spicy questions with epic people. Each episode answers hard questions that help us progress in some aspect of our personal development. Our listeners are seekers who want those answers.

We speak to all kinds of incredible people to help achieve this goal, from business leaders to entrepreneurs, community leaders to political leaders, spiritual leaders and philosophers, activists, writers, and more.

Join me twice a week as we build a community of the strongest, wisest, most courageous self-leaders on the planet — and go on this journey of discovery and energetic transformation together.

I’m delighted to have you here.
