Why do we so easily speak against, judge, and slander one another — and what does God actually think about it? This sermon on James 4:11–12 exposes a hard truth: when we judge our brothers and sisters, we're not just being critical — we're stepping into God's role as judge, a position we were never meant to occupy. The message digs into what James means by slander, why judgment is an act of hubris, and how God judges so differently than we do. When God looks at you, he doesn't focus on your failures — he looks past them to see the blood of Christ covering you. So what's the filter we should use when tempted to judge others? A powerful invitation to reconciliation, plus a conviction about the sin of presumption: we don't have enough time to delay saying what needs to be said or to put off making things right. We're just a vapor that appears for a little while.

What actually causes the fights, quarrels, and division in our relationships — our marriages, friendships, churches? James 4:1–10 traces it back to something deeper than circumstances: unchecked desires warring within us, and the pride that refuses to let them go. In this message, we walk through James' pointed language — "you adulterous people" — and discover a God who jealously longs for our full devotion, not because he's harsh, but because he loves us more than we love him. Along the way: a story about a first budget fight, the difference between pride and humility, and why "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble" is both a warning and an invitation. The message ends with a practical path forward — submit, resist, draw near, confess, humble yourself — and the promise that God will lift up those who do.

The Church that Christ is Building — Matthew 16:13-19
Guest speaker: Bishop Lawrence

At Caesarea Philippi — standing in the shadow of a pagan temple and a cave the ancients called the gate to the underworld — Jesus made a declaration: I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Bishop Lawrence walks the sentence word by word:

• I — Jesus is the architect. Not Peter, not a pope, not a pastor.
• Will — a promise about the future, spoken before the church existed.
• Build — not a one-time act, but an ongoing work still expanding across every continent.
• My — it was never our church, and the enemy loves to divide us over preferences that have no eternal value.
• Church — ekklesia, the called-out ones. God isn't building a building. He's building a people.

Along the way, three kinds of churches: the memorial church, convinced its best days are behind it; the maintenance church, content to keep everyone comfortable; and the movement church, still reaching, still on mission. From Acts 2, six marks of the church Jesus started — Spirit-filled, disciple-making, fellowshipping, worshiping, praying, and evangelistic.

The message closes with a word over Life Tabernacle from Job 8:7: though your beginning was small, yet your latter end shall greatly increase.

Doers of the Word — James 1:19-27

After five weeks in James chapter 1, we reach the letter's thesis statement. James has covered trials, perseverance, wisdom, and keeping our eyes on the prize — and now he tells us why it all matters: do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourself. Do what it says.

In this message, Pastor Dallas Herndon walks through three movements in the text:

• Be quick to listen (vv. 19-21) — you cannot be a good doer of the Word if you are not first a good hearer of it. In a culture of shrinking attention spans, the art of hearing has to be recovered.
• Don't deceive yourself (vv. 22-25) — the man who glances in a mirror and forgets his face. Looking only at ourselves, we always come away satisfied. Looking intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, we see Christ — and we see what needs to change.
• Practice pure worship (vv. 26-27) — a tight rein on the tongue, active care for orphans and widows, and a life kept from the pollution of the world.
