  • Island Roots, Global Reach - Culture, Community and Connection | Ft. Lexi Chow
    2025/11/04
In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, many of us throughout the diaspora continue to grapple with seeing the unimaginable devastation Western Jamaican residents are coping with. We have experienced loss, resilience, and the relentless sense of community that defines Caribbean people.

In times like these, conversations that remind us of our shared humanity, resilience, the importance of community, and amplify awareness of the dire need, are important. This is one of those conversations.

This week, we are talking di tings with the CEO & founder of the CODA Network and Jamaican Women Leading Hollywood, Lexi Chow.

Raised between Jamaica and the U.S., Lexi’s story is a celebration of dual belonging. She reflects on her family’s legacy; from her entrepreneurial grandmother and creative and disciplined mother, to her impeccably poised aunts whose strength and style taught her the power of identity; all of whom shaped the foundation of who she is today. Lexi also shares how she is helping creators tell authentic stories through CODA Network, and how Jamaican Women Leading Hollywood became a movement for representation and empowerment.

Lexi reminds us what it means to lead with intention, vision, and heart. We discuss Hurricane Melissa relief, resilience, leadership, legacy, how culture fuels innovation, how Lexi's belief in herself and desire to amplify Caribbean culture are helping others find their own voice, and so much more!

This is more than an interview, it’s a reminder that conversation can be an act of healing and amplifying awareness, and that even in our most difficult chapters, our stories still have the power to restore hope.

So grab your tea, coffee, or a glass of wine, and let’s talk di tings!

This episode explores the irreplaceable contributions of the original Maytals band members, the universal lessons within Toots and the Maytals songs like "54-46 (That’s My Number)" and "Never Get Weary", and the genius Toots’ storytelling that made their songs both timeless and personal.

Although Sister Nancy's 1982 version of "Bam Bam" is popularized, the original "Bam Bam" was written by Toots Hibbert and performed by Toots & the Maytals and Byron Lee & the Dragoniers, in 1966? The catchy phrase, "Bam Bam" led to its longevity that became widely popular and was later incorporated into the resurging Dancehall genre in the 80s, when Dancehall vocalists (or deejays) reference the popular phrase.

This special episode celebrates the beautiful spirit, powerful voice, and incredible storytelling Toots Hibbert gave to the world, and invites you to keep his legacy alive by continuing to listen to Toots & the Maytals music, continuing to spread positivity and love in his honour; and to never get weary.
