今回は、鳴門教育大学とJICAモザンビーク事務所の連携協定の下で派遣され、モザンビークで活動されているボランティア隊員の皆さんにお話を伺いました。短期派遣の3名、長期派遣の1名にご参加いただき、それぞれの現地での経験をシェアしていただきました。モザンビークに行ってみての率直な感想や、小学校・教員養成校での活動の1日の流れ、言語の壁、そして現地での暮らしについて、さまざまなお話を伺っています。現地だからこそ見える景色、感じる思いをたくさん伺うことができました。今回は日下もモザンビークからご参加し、途中接続が不安定になる場面もありましたが、それも含めて“今のモザンビーク”を感じられる1時間となりました。それぞれが明確な夢や目標を持ち、その実現に向かって前向きに取り組んでいる姿がとても印象的でした。ぜひお聴きください！This time, we had the opportunity to interview JICA volunteer members who have been dispatched to Mozambique under the partnership agreement between Naruto University of Education and the JICA Mozambique Office, and who are currently engaged in activities there.Three on short-term assignments and one on a long-term assignment.They shared their impressions of living in Mozambique, their daily routines at primary schools and teacher training colleges, the challenges of language barriers, and what everyday life looks like on the ground.Kusaka also joined us directly from Mozambique. 今回は、鳴門教育大学の日下智志准教授、日本で高校の英語教師を務める内住祐介さんとともに、5日間にわたるユタ州スタディツアーを実施しました。

平日3日間は、大学訪問や附属小学校の視察、地域のアートセンター訪問に加え、図書館や大学にて日本の数学教育に関する講演を行いました。また、大学では節分ワークショップも開催し、教育と文化の両面から日本の魅力を発信する充実した日程となりました。

週末は、アーチーズ国立公園およびキャニオンランズ国立公園を訪問し、雄大な自然に圧倒される体験も得ました。

今回のポッドキャストでは、学校における「教室」という概念の違い、日本と米国の教員文化の比較、そして両国をつなぐ架け橋となる可能性等々について幅広く語っています。また、大学の規模感や教育環境の違いにも触れ、ローカルな米国を感じられる回になったかと思います。

たとえば附属小学校では、1つのクラスに複数の教員が配置され、それぞれが明確な役割を担っていました。授業準備の時間もあらかじめスケジュールに組み込まれており、過度な残業に頼らずに、のびのびと教育に向き合える環境が整っている点が印象的でした。

日本と米国の違い、そして共通点。実際に現地を訪れたからこそ見えてきた気づきや学びをお伝えしています。

私たちが感じた多くの学びや感動を言葉にすることの難しさを実感するとともに、ぜひ実際にこの地を訪れ、体感していただきたいとも感じました。（今年の秋には新たなスタディツアー募集があるかもしれません！）

In this episode, we share our experiences from a five-day study tour in Utah, USA, together with Dr. Satoshi Kusaka, an associate professor from Naruto university of education and Mr. Yusuke Uchizumi, a high school English teacher from Japan.

During the three weekdays, we visited universities, a university-affiliated elementary school, and a local art center. We also gave lectures on Japanese mathematics education at libraries and multiple universities, and hosted a Setsubun cultural workshop. The program offered a rich opportunity to engage in both educational exchange and cultural outreach.

Over the weekend, we traveled to Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, where we were deeply moved by the breathtaking landscapes.

In the podcast, we discuss a wide range of topics, including differences in classroom culture, teacher motivation in the United States, contrasts between Japanese and American educators, the scale of U.S. universities, and what it means to serve as a bridge between Japan and the United States.

For example, at the affiliated elementary school, it was common to see multiple teachers working together in a single classroom, each fulfilling a clearly defined role. Dedicated time for lesson preparation was built into the schedule, creating an environment where teachers could focus on teaching without relying on excessive overtime. This approach left a strong impression on us.

We also reflect on both the differences and similarities between Japanese and American education systems.

While it is challenging to fully capture the excitement and inspiration we felt through words alone, this experience reminded us of the importance of articulation—and also of the value of seeing and feeling these environments firsthand. (There may even be another study tour opportunity coming this fall.)

第11回は、鳴門教育大学の石坂広樹教授をゲストにお迎えしました。 法学部出身で法哲学の修士課程へ進学した石坂先生が、コスタリカとの出会いをきっかけに進路や専門性を「国際協力」や「教育」に大きく転換。語学が苦手だったところからスペイン語環境に飛び込み、博士課程へ進学。その後は在外専門調査員としてホンジュラスの日本大使館で国際協力に携わり、英語の必要性を痛感して英語で修士を取得。さらに大学教員としてのキャリアへとつながっていく歩みを、丁寧に語ってくださいました。 印象的だったのは、「やりたいと思ったらやる」「決めて動けば道は開ける」という一貫した姿勢です。語学も研究も仕事も、遠回りをしながらでも継続し、結果を出すまで徹底して向き合う姿勢に、背中を押されました。

そして何より私たちが心に刺さったのは、専門性は最初から決まっていなくても、地道に取り組むことで築いていけるというメッセージです。一つの道に一直線でなくても、その時々の出会いや選択を積み重ね、決めたことを地道に突き詰めて積み上げていくことで、自分の軸や専門は形づくられていく、そんな言葉に勇気をもらいました。

また、鳴門教育大学の国際協力の現場で大切にされている学生との関わり方（継続的な1対1、旅を通じた学び、現地調査経験の価値など）についても、具体的なお話がたくさん詰まっています。

In Episode 11, we welcomed Professor Hiroki Ishizaka from Naruto University of Education as our guest.Originally a law major who went on to pursue a master’s degree in legal philosophy, Professor Ishizaka experienced a major turning point in his career after encountering Costa Rica.

Despite struggling with languages, he immersed himself in a Spanish-speaking environment and entered a Ph.D. program. He later worked as a Researcher at the Embassy of Japan in Honduras, engaging in international cooperation, where he strongly realized the necessity of English. This led him to earn another master’s degree taught entirely in English, eventually paving the way for his career as a university professor. He shared this journey with great care and honesty.

What left a strong impression was his consistent mindset: “If you want to do something, do it,” and “Once you decide and take action, a path will open.” Whether in language learning, research, or professional work, he continues to persevere, taking detours when necessary, but staying committed until results are achieved. His attitude was truly encouraging.Most of all, what resonated deeply with me was his message that expertise does not have to be defined from the beginning, It can be built over time.

Even without a perfectly linear path, by embracing encounters and choices along the way and steadily committing to what one decides to pursue, one’s own core and professional identity gradually take shape. His words gave me great courage.
