  • Beginner Afrikaans 10: Hold a Three-Minute Conversation
    2026/08/25

You’ve spent nine episodes building your beginner Afrikaans. Now it’s time to put it all together and actually have a conversation.

In the Season 1 finale, you’ll use the everyday Afrikaans you’ve learnt throughout the series to talk about yourself, where you’re from, the languages you speak, your daily routine, your free time, your weekend and the people in your life.

You’ll also practise simple ways to make a conversation feel more natural, including:

    • En jy? — And you?

    • En met jou? — And you?

    • O, lekker! — Oh, nice!

    • Dit klink lekker. — That sounds nice.

    • Kan jy dit weer sê? — Can you say that again?

    • Kan jy ’n bietjie stadiger praat? — Can you speak a little more slowly?

    • Hoe sê mens ... in Afrikaans? — How do you say ... in Afrikaans?

    • Laat ek gou dink. — Let me think for a moment.

The episode starts with a natural model conversation and then helps you practise giving slightly longer answers, asking questions back and staying in the conversation when you don’t understand something or can’t remember a word.

You’ll then work through a supported conversation before taking part in the final challenge: a guided conversation of about three minutes, using only Afrikaans.

This isn’t a grammar test and you don’t need perfect Afrikaans. The goal is to answer, add a little more when you can, ask something back and keep the conversation moving.

By the end of the episode, you’ll be able to look back at Season 1 and hear just how much more Afrikaans you can actually use.

  • Beginner Afrikaans 9: Talk About Your Family and the People in Your Life
    2026/08/19

Learn how to talk about your family, friends and other important people in natural, everyday Afrikaans.

In Episode 9 of the beginner series, you’ll learn how to introduce someone, explain who they are, say where they live, talk about the things they enjoy and describe some of the things you do together.

You’ll practise useful Afrikaans phrases such as:

    • Dis my suster, Lisa. — This is my sister, Lisa.

    • Sy bly in Pretoria. — She lives in Pretoria.

    • Ek het twee kinders. — I have two children.

    • My pa hou van rugby. — My dad likes rugby.

    • My vriendin lees graag. — My friend enjoys reading.

    • Ons kom goed oor die weg. — We get along well.

    • Ons is baie na aan mekaar. — We’re very close.

    • Ons gaan gereeld saam stap. — We often go for walks together.

    • Het jy broers of susters? — Do you have brothers or sisters?

    • Wat doen julle graag saam? — What do you enjoy doing together?

You’ll also learn everyday family words such as ma, pa, broer, suster, kinders, ouma and oupa, as well as useful ways to talk about a partner or friend.

Throughout the episode, you’ll answer questions, change familiar sentence patterns to make them your own, and practise having a simple conversation about someone who is important to you.

At the end, you’ll put everything together and describe one person in your life in Afrikaans.

This is an interactive beginner lesson, so speak along and answer the questions during the pauses. You can talk about your real family, a partner, a friend or anyone else who matters to you — and if you’d rather keep things private, you can simply invent someone for the practice.

You’ll also practise using words such as gewoonlik, soms and af en toe to talk about how often you do something.

Throughout the episode, you’ll answer questions, change familiar sentence patterns to make them your own, and practise having a simple conversation about your free time.

At the end, you’ll put everything together and talk about the things you genuinely enjoy doing — whether that’s exercising, reading, watching TV, spending time with friends or simply relaxing at home.

This is an interactive beginner lesson, so speak along and answer the questions during the pauses. You don’t need an unusual or impressive hobby. The goal is to use Afrikaans to talk about your real life.
