The sky over Lawrenceburg, Tennessee had already turned a strange greenish gray when the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Lawrence County at 4:28 PM on April 16, 1998. Four minutes later, a tornado touched down near Weakley Creek, about three miles south of town. This episode reconstructs its fifteen minutes on the ground: entering the city limits at 4:36 PM, striking the downtown area at 4:38 PM, and strengthening into a violent F3 with winds estimated between 158 and 206 miles per hour along a path roughly eight miles long and nearly a quarter mile wide. The reconstruction includes a school that had been evacuated earlier that day for a fire drill, a church whose pastor recalled the building shaking on its foundation, and the damage along Highway 43. It closes with the memorial services that followed and how warnings like this one eventually gave way to today's precise polygon-based alerts.
