In our second podcast episode, we dive deep into a topic that goes far beyond grammar rules and vocabulary lists:
What does “good German” actually mean?

We are joined by Hauke Cornelius, an experienced German teacher who has been teaching since the early 1990s. With a background in German studies (Germanistik), literature, linguistics, and education – and personal experience studying in former East Germany (the German Democratic Republic) – she brings a unique and thoughtful perspective to language learning.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • The cultural weight of “du” vs. “Sie”
    • Why some teenagers actually feel uncomfortable being addressed too informally
    • How language reflects identity and social boundaries
    • The difference between knowing grammar and feeling the language
    • Why vocabulary growth is often underestimated
    • And how reading widely can completely transform your German

We also talk about the importance of immersion – what we call developing a Sprachgefühl (language intuition). Whether through reading, listening to podcasts, watching the news, or labeling objects in your home with articles (der, die, das), building a relationship with the language is what makes it come alive.

One of the key insights from this conversation:
Learning German isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency. Exposure. Curiosity. And staying engaged with the language in meaningful ways.

For learners planning to move to Germany or Austria, we also discuss why cultural knowledge matters just as much as grammar. Understanding traditions, regional differences, and communication styles can make integration smoother – and conversations richer.

    If you are:

    • Learning German for work
    • Planning to relocate
    • Interested in language and culture
    • Or simply fascinated by how languages shape the way we think

    This episode is for you.

Listen now and join us on our journey into the world of German language, culture, and communication.

And if you enjoy our content, make sure to follow our podcast for more conversations about learning German in a practical, cultural, and human way.
