Welcome to Kunst Speak with Brask. In this podcast, we explore the world of art through the eyes of passionate art enthusiasts based in Los Angeles and New York. Together with art collector, publisher, and curator Jens-Peter Brask, we uncover inspiring perspectives, captivating stories, and memorable anecdotes from the art world. Our mission is to spark curiosity and encourage more people to connect with and appreciate art in all its forms. Join us as we embark on this creative journey together.

In this episode, we visit Tom Sanford in his studio in Harlem. Working primarily in painting, Sanford explores the contradictions and complexities of contemporary American culture through a distinctive visual language that blends conceptual ideas with references to popular culture. His subjects span a remarkable range - from historical scenes of celebrity assassinations and icon-like portraits of gangsta rappers to intricate narratives inspired by Hollywood films and vivid depictions of everyday life in bars and New York subway cars.
We talk about how, growing up as a white suburban hip-hop fan, Sanford came to realize that race is one of the defining issues in America - and how that realization has shaped his artistic practice. We also discuss his painting of the young Danish man who assaulted Shepard Fairey following the artist's exhibition opening at a gallery in Denmark, as well as Sanford's love of the New York Knicks and his distinctive cut-out figures.
All this and much more in this episode.
