In this episode we go to New York to meet renowned art collector Hubert Neumann, whose collection is widely regarded as one of the most important private collections of modern and contemporary art in the United States.
Over several decades, Neumann has assembled an extraordinary collection featuring artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, and Robert Rauschenberg. Rather than simply collecting artworks, he has cultivated close relationships with many of the artists themselves, supporting their careers and acquiring much of the collection directly during their lifetimes.
Neumann is also the originator of the term Aftermodernism, which he uses to describe the generation of artists who followed modernism and postmodernism. The concept has inspired a number of exhibitions drawn from his collection.
Our conversation moves across art history, philosophy, and the contemporary art world. We take a closer look at works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, and other artists from the collection, and discuss the profound influence of the philosopher Alain Badiou on Neumann's thinking.
We also talk about what Neumann considers one of the greatest oversights in American art history: the failure to fully recognize graffiti as a vital artistic movement. He argues that graffiti artists have played a far more significant role than the art establishment has traditionally acknowledged and how global capitalism is connected to this issue.
