In this episode, we visit AIKO in her incredible New York studio. Her residency offers breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, the 9/11 Memorial, and the Statue of Liberty from the 28th floor of Four World Trade Center.
AIKO is a Japanese street artist renowned for her unique ability to blend Western art movements with traditional Eastern techniques and craftsmanship. She is also known for her large-scale public artworks, which have been installed in cities including Rome, Shanghai, and Brooklyn.
Originally from Tokyo, AIKO has been creating art since she was just two years old. Pursuing a career as an artist wasn't considered a conventional path for a young woman in Japan, where societal expectations often encouraged women to become devoted wives and mothers instead.
After graduating from art school in Tokyo, she left Japan at the age of 21. At the time, she had developed a strong interest in filmmaking and began making films of her own. She was also fascinated by music videos and creative culture from overseas. Without the internet, the outside world felt distant, but she sensed that exciting things were happening abroad - and she knew she had to experience them for herself.In 1997, the same year she graduated, AIKO moved to New York without knowing anyone. By chance, she discovered a vibrant creative community that welcomed her.
As a woman, breaking into the art world wasn't easy. On top of that, she had to learn English from scratch, which made life in New York especially challenging. To immerse herself in the culture, she started going out to clubs almost every night. Music became a gateway to new friendships, and she quickly found a sense of belonging.
It was through this scene that she was introduced to street art and graffiti - a world that would ultimately define her artistic career.
