Long before Kedah became a rice bowl, it was a sovereign sultanate caught between Siamese overlordship and British commercial ambition. In 1821, the Siamese army under Chao Phraya Nakhon Noi marched south, sacking Alor Setar and forcing Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Shah II into exile. This episode traces the events leading up to the invasion—Kedah's refusal to send the Bunga Mas tribute, the sultan's secret negotiations with the British in Penang, and the brutal sack of the capital.
