  • How Plants Saved My Life: Herbalism, Alcohol, Motherhood, Mission-Driven Work & the Whole Journey
    2026/07/07
In this episode of the Journey Couture Podcast, Melissa shares the whole picture behind her work, her lived experience, and the many threads that have shaped her path: herbalism, alcohol, motherhood, marriage, mission-driven work, plant medicine, nervous system support, spiritual awakening, and conscious connection.Melissa begins by sharing one of the most important qualifications she brings to this conversation: she drank for nearly 35 years. She knows what it feels like to be a mother, a wife, a working woman, and a career-builder trying to hold everything together while navigating stress, exhaustion, relationships, parenting, ambition, anxiety, and the hidden ways alcohol can become woven into daily life. She also shares her 15-year background in the natural products industry, where she worked with companies rooted in organic ingredients, fair trade, sustainability, clean quality products, traditional herbal medicine, and earth stewardship. Through this work, Melissa developed a deep reverence for plants, soil, farmers, cultivation, harvest timing, and the care required to turn living plants into healing products. This episode explores how plant medicine entered Melissa’s life during a season of panic, depletion, sleep disruption, motherhood pressure, marriage strain, and emotional overwhelm. Instead of immediately being placed on pharmaceuticals, she was guided toward a naturopathic path — and that choice opened a new doorway.Through herbal supplements, adaptogens, nervines, functional drinks, and plant-based rituals, Melissa began to experience better sleep, less anxiety, stronger immunity, and a deeper relationship with her body and nervous system. She also speaks to the importance of replacement rituals when alcohol is removed. For many women, drinking is not only about the substance — it is also about comfort, stress relief, reward, ritual, social connection, and the nervous system looking for a way to soften. Melissa shares why functional mocktails, herbal drinks, and intentional plant-based supports can become part of the bridge back to balance. This conversation is about more than quitting drinking. It is about the full Journey Couture lens: body, mind, spirit, beauty, nature, sobriety, curiosity, intention, reverence, reclamation, and creating a life that feels consciously chosen. In This Episode, Melissa shares about:Drinking for nearly 35 years and how that lived experience informs her workBeing a mother, wife, working woman, and career-builder while trying to hold everything togetherThe stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and emotional overwhelm that often sit underneath alcohol useHer 15-year background in the natural products industryWorking with mission-driven brands rooted in sustainability, organic ingredients, fair trade, and earth stewardshipThe difference between true stewardship and profit-driven wellnessWhy ownership, sourcing, product integrity, and company values matterLearning the journey of plant medicine from soil to seed to cultivation to harvestDeveloping reverence for farmers, fresh plants, herbal supplements, and traditional medicineHow adaptogens, nervines, and herbal support helped her sleep, anxiety, immunity, and nervous systemWhy replacement rituals matter when alcohol is removedFunctional mocktails, herbal drinks, and plant-based rituals as support toolsNervous system repair, emotional regulation, homeostasis, and whole-body reclamationConscious connection, storytelling, co-collaboration, and spiritual awakeningThe larger Journey Couture vision: curiosity, intention, healing, beauty, nature, and whole-life reclamationKey ThemesLived experience is qualification.Melissa brings the truth of nearly 35 years of drinking, motherhood, marriage, career pressure, healing, and reclamation into the conversation. This is not theory. This is lived wisdom.Plants work.Herbs, adaptogens, nervines, and functional plant-based support helped Melissa restore sleep, calm her nervous system, reduce anxiety, support immunity, and rebuild a relationship with her body.Motherhood and alcohol deserve honest conversation.Melissa speaks to the reality of being a working mother and wife trying to manage children, career, marriage, friendships, stress, and exhaustion while alcohol remained part of the coping pattern.Mission-driven work matters. Her years in the natural products industry gave her firsthand experience with brands that value organic ingredients, fair trade, sustainability, traditional herbalism, clean quality products, and reverence for the earth.Nature does not run on corporate timelines.Plants grow at their own pace. Crops can shift. Harvests can fail. Potency matters. Timing matters. Human care matters. Real plant medicine requires patience, respect, and stewardship.Replacement rituals are powerful. When alcohol is removed, the body and nervous system still need comfort, rhythm, nourishment, and support. • Forest Bathing & Nature's Healing Power | Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary, Hawaiʻi
    2026/07/01
Forest Bathing & the Healing Power of Nature | Inside Hawaiʻi's Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary with Nadara Rose & Brooke OlenskiWhat if one of the most powerful healing modalities on Earth isn't found in a bottle or a prescription—but in the forest itself? In this episode of Journey Out of the Bottle, I sit down with Nadara Rose and Brooke Olenski of the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary to explore the remarkable story behind one of Hawaiʻi's most treasured ecosystems and the science-backed healing benefits of reconnecting with nature.🌿 The Legacy of Kona Cloud Forest SanctuaryFounded in 1982 by Norman Bizona, the sanctuary was created on land that had been deforested for cattle ranching. Through the intentional planting of fast-growing canopy trees, he demonstrated how quickly a damaged watershed could be restored.Today, the sanctuary is lovingly stewarded by his daughter, Nadara Rose, along with her son Drew and partner Brooke Olenski, whose mission is to be a voice for the forest while reconnecting humanity with nature. As the only tropical cloud forest in the United States, this rare ecosystem captures moisture directly from passing clouds, supports Hawaiʻi's coffee industry, replenishes the island's aquifer, and nourishes surrounding marine ecosystems.🌱 What You'll Learn About Forest BathingThe Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku (Forest Bathing) and why it has been prescribed for health and stress reduction since 1982.The concept of biological softening—how our nervous systems naturally begin to regulate when immersed in nature. How spending just 10 minutes outdoors can significantly reduce cortisol levels. How breathing in phytoncides—natural compounds released by trees—may support immune function while increasing serotonin and dopamine. The benefits of grounding (earthing) by making direct contact with the Earth.🍃 Practical Ways to Experience Nature's HealingYou don't need to disappear into a rainforest to experience these benefits.Brooke shares simple practices you can begin today through mindful moments and micro-meditations by engaging your senses:Notice the rhythm of your breath.Listen to birdsong.Feel the texture of a tree.Smell the air after a rainfall.Slow down long enough for your nervous system to remember what it already knows.🌎 A Bigger ConversationThis episode goes far beyond conservation. We explore what Brooke calls a form of "subversive activism"—inviting people into nature's healing rather than convincing them why they should care. When people experience the forest for themselves, protecting it becomes a natural response.Perhaps the most profound reminder of all is this:We are not separate from nature—we are nature.Healthy forests create healthier people, and healthier people naturally become better stewards of the planet.Whether you live in the middle of a city or beside an ancient forest, this conversation offers simple, meaningful ways to reconnect with yourself and the living world around you.Resources MentionedKona Cloud Forest Sanctuary : https://konacloudforest.com/our-story/Book a Guided Tour HereFollow Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/konacloudforestsanctuary/Learn more about Shinrin-yoku (Forest Bathing): Shinrin-Yoku Connecting People to Nature Through The Art of Forest BathingRead Norman Bizona's Tropical Gardening column: Celebrate Independence from High Food Bills by Planting Bananas If this conversation inspired you, please like, subscribe, and share it with someone who could use a reminder that sometimes the greatest medicine is simply stepping outside.Support the showCheck out the YouTube channel for lots of Conscious-Raising, Mystical, WooWoo & often Zany content!https://www.youtube.com/@Journey-CoutureAnd, for Alcohol-Free Living, Coaching and Community, visit: www.JourneyOutOfTheBottle.comAnd for all the other amazing offerings from Journey Couture, check out our website for perhaps something near-and-dear to your heart! www.Journey-Couture.com

  • How Plants Saved My Life : My Background, Expertise & Passion
    2026/05/30

My Personal Story about How herbs, nature, and conscious recovery changed everything

    I drank for 35 years.

I was a working mother, a wife, a career woman trying to do it all — managing kids, relationships, expectations, pressure, and ambition.
I WAS LIVING THE "PRESCRIBED LIFE" !!

And like so many of us, I drank. It was normalized. It was rewarded. It was everywhere.

At the same time, I spent decades working in the natural products industry — with mission-driven, fair-trade brands, plant stewards, ethical farmers, and companies rooted in reverence for the Earth and human health. I worked with elixirs, creams, raw materials, and living plants. I saw firsthand how plants are grown, cultivated, harvested, and respected for their potency and intelligence.

I also watched what happened when large chemical and mass-market corporations bought up many of those natural brands — and how we are now seeing similar patterns emerge with pharma, mushrooms, and cannabis.

In this video, I talk about:

    • The realities of drinking culture and survival
    • My experience inside the natural products world
    • The difference between whole plants and isolated compounds
    • Seeds, soil, cultivation, harvest timing, and potency
    • Why plants are alive — not passive ingredients
    • And the importance of rapport with plants

The turning point came when I asked a therapist for a prescription for anxiety and panic attacks — and instead, she recommended a natural, plant-based route.

That decision — and those plants — saved my life.

Even while I was still drinking, herbs supported my sleep, my immune system, my nervous system, and my resilience. And when alcohol was removed, my body, mind, and spirit were able to recover far more quickly with the help of plants.

This is not about replacing one dependency with another.
It’s about supporting the body’s innate ability to heal.

Today, I coach and support people who are choosing (or curious about) an alcohol-free lifestyle, helping them thoughtfully and safely incorporate herbs and plant allies as part of nervous system repair, emotional regulation, and embodied recovery.

If you’ve ever questioned your relationship with alcohol…
    If you’ve felt dismissed, over-medicated, or unheard…
If you’re curious about plant-supported recovery that honors the whole human —

    This conversation is for you.
