Baker worked with French intelligence officer Jacques Abtey, smuggling information out of embassy parties and diplomatic receptions. She pinned secret messages inside her underwear and wrote intelligence in invisible ink on her sheet music. When asked why she risked her life, she said: "France made me what I am. I am prepared to give my life for France."
She carried classified information about German troop movements during Operation Torch — the Allied invasion of North Africa. She entertained troops while transmitting intelligence across borders. Her celebrity status made her invisible to suspicion. No one searched Josephine Baker.
After the war, France awarded her the Croix de Guerre and the Rosette de la Résistance. She was the first American-born woman to receive the French Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur for military service.
She returned to the United States and was met with the same Jim Crow racism she had fled. In 1951, she refused to perform at a segregated Miami nightclub. She was banned from the city. The FBI opened a file on her.
In 2021, Josephine Baker became the first Black woman inducted into France's Panthéon — the nation's highest honor. America never gave her anything.
