JetLube KOPR-KOTE® is the copper-based drill collar and tool joint compound built to solve one of the most costly problems in rotary drilling: preventing downhole makeup on API rotary shouldered connections before it destroys shoulder faces, joint efficiency, and your day. KOPR-KOTE's solids package — copper flake, graphite, and natural extreme-pressure additives in an aluminum-complex petroleum-fluid base — works differently from conventional lubricants. Instead of reducing friction uniformly, it increases the coefficient of friction under compressive load, so as makeup stress rises, resistance rises with it. The result: shoulder faces seat cleanly, standoff is eliminated, and connections hold torque where it belongs. Friction factor is 1.15 relative to API RP 5A3 Annex I, developed on full-scale API tool joint connections. Multiply your thread manufacturer's recommended torque value by 1.15 — or contact the connection manufacturer directly for confirmed torque specs.
The thermal and mechanical specs support demanding downhole service. Service range runs 0°F (-18°C) to 450°F (232°C), with a dropping point of 450°F (232°C) per ASTM D-2265 and flash point above 430°F (221°C) per ASTM D-92. The 4-ball weld point hits 800 kgf typical (ASTM D-2596), NLGI Grade 1 penetration is 310–330 at 77°F, specific gravity is 1.15, and density is 9.6 lb/gal. Oil separation per ASTM D-6184 stays below 3.0. Copper strip corrosion rates 1A typical — the compound protects against rust and corrosion even when joints are wet and exposed to drilling mud or formation fluids, a baseline requirement KOPR-KOTE meets by design.
The lead-free, zinc-free formulation is a meaningful operational and regulatory differentiator. KOPR-KOTE carries UK CEFAS OCNS Group B environmental rating and DOT Approval CA2004080025 confirming non-marine-pollutant status — critical for offshore or environmentally sensitive locations. It is also NAM/Shell approved for under-balanced drilling. An Arctic-grade version extends service to cold-climate operations. Selecting the right compound for your connection type matters. Premium connections — HI-TORQUE® (HT), eXtreme® Torque (XT®), and XT-M™ — are engineered to a 1.0 friction factor, not 1.15. Applying KOPR-KOTE to these connections may require torque adjustment; the specified alternative is Jet-Lube KOPR EXT FF 1.0. Running invert or high-pH muds? Switch to Jet-Lube EXTREME®. Wedge-type thread connections needing wear protection call for NCS-30® ECF™. These are not edge cases — they are documented product exclusions your RFPs and compound selection procedures should capture explicitly. Pipe size, thread geometry, and mud contamination all shift the realized friction factor; the published value is a relative reference, not an absolute guarantee.
