Luke 15 gives us three of Jesus' most beloved parables — the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son — but we rarely hear them the way they were originally delivered: all at once, aimed at religious insiders who were furious that Jesus would welcome outsiders to his table. In this sermon, Pastor Karl Grant shows how these parables build to a single point directed at the Pharisees — and at us.
The real surprise of the lost son story isn't the younger brother's rebellion or the father's over-the-top welcome. Instead, it's the older brother's self-righteous refusal to celebrate someone else's forgiveness. And this is something most churchgoers know from the inside, whether it shows up in grudges, gossip, or the quiet conviction that some people just don't deserve the same grace we've received.
This sermon offers honest, practical counsel for anyone who's caught themselves being the older brother — and a reminder that the Father comes out from the celebration to plead with us, too.
