Late Wednesday evening, ESPN released a story explaining that it had obtained a copy of the cease-and-desist letter sent to LSU on behalf of Jayden Daniels regarding the use of his name, image, and likeness.
The letter stems from LSU issuing the No. 5 jersey to DJ Pickett. Daniels and his camp have not felt respected by LSU for the accomplishments he achieved on the field during his time with the Tigers.
LSU no longer retires jersey numbers. In fact, the only number officially retired by LSU is No. 20, worn by Billy Cannon, who won both a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship at LSU. Since 2007, LSU’s policy has been to retire a player’s jersey but not the number itself, allowing the program to continue issuing those numbers as they become available.
Since Joe Burrow left LSU, his No. 9 has not been issued to another player, and until now, the same could be said for Jayden Daniels and No. 5.
