In 1384, a nine-year-old girl was crowned king of Poland. Not queen—king. This episode tells the story of Jadwiga of Anjou, the youngest daughter of Louis I of Hungary, who inherited the Polish throne and went on to shape the destiny of Eastern Europe. We follow her journey from the Hungarian court to Kraków's Wawel Cathedral, where she was crowned Hedvig Rex Poloniae. We explore the political gamesmanship behind her betrothal to William of Habsburg and her eventual marriage to Jogaila of Lithuania, a union that created the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. But beyond the diplomacy, Jadwiga was a devout ruler who funded the restoration of Kraków's Academy—later the Jagiellonian University—and personally led a diplomatic mission to the Teutonic Order. Her death in 1399 at age 25, shortly after giving birth, cut short a reign that had already transformed Poland. We discuss the controversies surrounding her canonization and her enduring legacy as a symbol of Polish sovereignty and learning. #Jadwiga #Poland #MedievalHistory #JagiellonianDynasty #Coronation #WawelCastle #Kraków #Angevin #Jogaila #Lithuania #PolishLithuanianCommonwealth #TeutonicOrder #JagiellonianUniversity #WomeninHistory #Queenship #Canonization #1384 #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
