Jackson, Tennessee had storms bearing down on it all evening on May 4, 2003. At 8:57 PM, a tornado warning was issued for Madison County after meteorologists in Memphis spotted a pronounced hook echo on radar. This episode reconstructs the F4 tornado that followed, a storm with winds estimated between 207 and 260 miles per hour that stayed on the ground for roughly thirty minutes, cutting a path about fifteen miles long and up to half a mile wide. The reconstruction moves through the neighborhoods on the west side of the city, where homes built in the 1950s and 1960s took the full force of the storm, and onto the campus of Union University at 9:18 PM, where students sheltering in hallways and bathrooms were buried under debris yet none were killed. The episode also traces the aftermath, including how the campus rebuilt and was tested again by another tornado in 2008.
