Twenty-seven percent of American adults have cut off contact with a family member. That is roughly 67 million people, and the Cornell researcher behind the number says his own figure is low because people would not admit it on the survey.
Daniel and Allison Hartman sit down with Randy Schrum for a longer conversation than usual, because this one earned it. Between the two of them they can name five to ten families living this right now. Not families of the world. Christian families. Parents with an empty chair at the table and no idea what they did.
This episode walks through seven words a generation has been handed, what each one actually means, and what it is being used to do. Disagreement has become harm. Correction has become injury. Responsibility given to a child at three or four years old, which a twenty year University of Minnesota study found to be the single best predictor of success in a person's mid twenties, now gets labeled as damage.
There is real abuse in this world, and cutting off contact is sometimes necessary. That is not most of these cases. Most of these cases are a generation trained to name normal parenting as injury and to call walking away the cure.
Scripture has a different answer. Forgiveness. Reconciliation. Conflict that sharpens instead of severs.
Share this one with a mother who is parenting out of fear of losing her child.
