  • Episode 15: 15 I'm still standing with Laura Smyth
    2021/09/12
In this episode we discuss child birth, but I think maybe a closer description may be families and their dynamics, how we see ourselves within the family and how we are affected by that. As always there are many many more topics covered, and as always mental health and therapy is tapped into as well as mental health and comedy.

There is good reason for all the comedy chat as I am in conversation with the massively talented Laura Smyth, she is an East Londoner. Not only did she started stand-up in 2019 but she won the Funny Women Stage Award in the same year. As seen on Jonathan Ross’s comedy club, Dave, Comedy Central. Described as a ‘force of nature’ Steve Bennett, Chortle. She is a mother of 3, and until recently was an English teacher but has now joined the comedy circus full-time.

  • Episode 14: 14 I'm still standing with Daphna Rowe
    2021/08/28

In this episode, we discuss grief (the loss of parents including dementia), abuse, mental health, and many other things, of course! This is a discussion between two people who have a relationship where we can be this open and honest, we are also funny and will be irreverent please don’t take offense, it’s our trauma we’ll talk about it how we like!

I am chatting with the fabulous Daphna Rowe, originally from Queens, New Yawk, the Founder & Perfumer of Lovorika, an ethical fragrance brand. She has an MSc in International Relations (focus on political psychology), and certification in Aromatherapy. Daphna is also a singer and writer.

She is super smart and very emotionally intelligent and I think this is a very good episode, listen, comment, share (and donate!)

  • Episode 13: 13 I'm still standing with my cousin Anna
    2021/08/14
In this episode we discuss domestic violence, we also touch upon murder, drug addiction, and mental health so here’s the trigger warning. This is a discussion between two women who know each other very well and we are funny people so we can jump from serious subjects to taking the piss out of each other some people may find it jarring but we all cope with trauma very differently.

I’m chatting with Anna a proud Jock and my big cousin. She’s a mother to 3 amazing boys. I say boys...men really. She lives a life of adventure, definitely not conforming. Lived and worked in Zambia, Cyprus, Germany, and Spain. She’s a total foodie with an amazing hubby, dream of doing my own thing one day..

Her motto is, the past is gone, learn from it, grow from it, and appreciate you cannot change it but you can affect your future. Don't let what you can't change define you. After all, what you experience in life makes you who you are today.

  • Episode 12: 12 I'm still standing with Mitzli Rose
    2021/07/31

This is season two back proper! Episodes will be released fortnightly from here on out, this episode I speak with the brilliant Miztli Rose about break-ups amongst other things. Miztli Rose is an actor-comedian and yoga teacher hailing from Brighton via Mexico. She trained as an actor at RADA but quickly fell in love with comedy after graduating in 2015. Before the pandemic she was working as a stand-up, improviser and sketch comedian with LADYLIKES duo. Now she spends her days teaching yoga, going for walks and paddle boarding with the Brighton ladies SUP club...she knows she needs to get back to work! We had a wonderful time and she taught me a lot, which is why I love doing these. get in touch to let me know what you think about the episode, how you cope with your trauma or anything else I’d love to hear from you.

  • Episode 11: 11 I'm still standing with Dahlia Belle
    2021/06/19
We are back! Always more trauma, I am talking with Dahlia Belle in this episode, and what a joy she is! We set off trying to talk about PTSD and we do touch on that but mostly we talk about gayness so it was obvious to me that this should be our pride episode. Although we are light-hearted we talk about homophobia, suicide, and drug misuse, if this is something you struggle with please take that into consideration when listening. I feel we handle it all well and never intend to insult and it is our trauma and we are comedians!

Hello and welcome to episode ten, of I'm still standing, the last in the season! In this episode I talk with drag queen extraordinaire Mahatma Khani, I met Mahatma on an online quiz and she was radiant, so as always I’m a comedian and she’s a drag queen so we can be irreverent but we are talking about our own trauma so we talk about it the way we like, alright! Having said this we do talk about isolation, mental health and agoraphobia so if this is something you don’t want to hear them maybe pick a different episode. I leave you to experience my super white take on Mahatma’s intro but she is an amazing artist, funny, insightful and a drive for change!

  • Episode 8: 08 I'm still standing with Laura Thomas
    2021/01/22
Hello and welcome to episode eight of I'm still standing, welcome back after a four month break sometimes you have to just stop and get your head right! In this episode I talk with the lovely Laura Thomas, I met Laura on the open mic circuit and was immediately a fan of hers. She has such a warm presence which means she can get away with saying anything and I love that, I was very happy to be asked to perform at her wonderful night (Sex standing up) with her co-host/founder and hilarious comic in her own right Ginnia Cheng (performing at #SubFunZoom’s first every show on the 28th of Jan). So Laura - in her own words - is someone who struggles with science by day and a struggling comedian by night, she loves comedy and has met some wonderful and weird people along the way, leading to new experiences to help mend the past. Most importantly it led to her starting a sex positive charity comedy night the aforementioned Sex standing up. When we are all allowed to hang out in sex shops again I implore you to attend one of these shows as it is so much more than a comedy night, both Laura and Ginnia are clearly passionate about this night and it really shows. In the meantime come and watch the #SubFunZoom gigs link to the first show here facebook.com/events/1334768370217742 but you can see all future shows by following facebook.com/SubFunComedy or instagram.com/subfun_/ or me instagram.com/nicolastephenisfunny/ twitter.com/nicolaisfunny and please follow Laura she’s brilliant instagram.com/lolo.comedy/
