What is happening at Delaney Hall in New Jersey should alarm every American regardless of political party. Reports of detainees on hunger strikes, allegations of poor conditions, use of force inside the facility, and clashes between protesters and law enforcement outside raise serious questions about civil liberties, human rights, and the future of democratic accountability in the United States.
If people are being detained in inhumane conditions, if peaceful protesters are being pushed into designated “free speech zones,” and if Americans are becoming comfortable with government power being used against vulnerable populations, then we are crossing dangerous lines that previous generations warned us about.
The real test of democracy is not how we treat the powerful. It is how we treat the powerless. History is full of examples where ordinary people looked away while others suffered, believing it would never affect them. Eventually, it did.
Whether you support immigration enforcement or oppose it, every American should be asking the same question: What kind of country do we want to be?
If citizens are unwilling to defend civil liberties, human dignity, and the right to dissent, then the future of the American experiment becomes increasingly uncertain.
