In the spring of 1998, Luna spent a weekend in the Ohio River town of Macksburg, population 1,102, cataloging the estate of a widow named Edna Voss. The house smelled of lavender and boiled milk. In the attic, behind a locked door with a key still in the lock, a wooden cradle swayed with no one near it, no window open, no draft. Luna sat with it for two hours, watching it move, and learned why the town had stopped visiting Edna Voss. This is a story about unfinished business, about a woman so afraid of the dark she refused to stop holding her dead daughter, and about the rhythm that carries on when breath stops. No one sleeps well after hearing it. Luna doesn't anymore.
