In the winter of 2016, Luna spent a week aboard the Mary Katherine, a sixty-foot trawler working the Grand Banks out of St. John's. The captain was a man named Tom O'Neill, quiet and precise, with a daughter he never talked about. On the third night, the net brought up something that wasn't fish — not a body, not debris, but a sound. A low, constant hum that came from the net itself, from something tangled in the mesh that had no visible shape. The crew felt it in their teeth. Tom ordered the net cut loose, but the hum didn't stop. It followed the boat for three days, growing louder each night, and when they finally limped back to port, the Mary Katherine's hull was vibrating like a tuning fork. No one would take her out again. Luna sits on the deck, oilskin pulled tight, watching the lights of another trawler fade into the dark, and she remembers the sound — still waiting, still hungry, still humming.
