The chief apostle. The man who preached the first sermon. The one in all the stained glass windows across western Europe. And he still caved to peer pressure — pulling away from Gentile believers the moment Jewish leaders showed up, not wanting to look bad in front of the wrong people. Paul confronted him publicly, face to face. If the man at the top of the church was still working through his stuff, the question of whether you have it all together before God can use you starts to look very different.
Paul's response to all of it — the opposition, the hypocrisy, the friendly fire from within — boils down to one verse he returns to throughout his entire life: I have been crucified with Christ. I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. He's not trying to construct a righteousness of his own. He's living in the grace of God, acknowledging that if righteousness could be gained through the law, what Jesus did meant nothing.
The people most likely to discourage your faith aren't always outside the church. Sometimes they're inside it — convinced that purity means meeting their specific standard, that following Jesus only counts if it looks a certain way. That's friendly fire. And the answer to it isn't bitterness or retreat. It's the same answer Paul gives: I'm not building a righteousness of my own. I'm living in his.
