Saul & Zedekiah: Two Kings, One Broken Heart

What happens when the person sitting on the throne cannot successfully rule himself?

In this episode of Humanizing the Bible Stories, we look at two very different kings separated by nearly four centuries: Saul, Israel's first king, and Zedekiah, Judah's final king before the Babylonian exile.

Their stories couldn't look more different on the surface. Saul begins as a seemingly humble and reluctant king, while Zedekiah inherits a kingdom already standing on the brink of destruction. Yet beneath their circumstances, we find strikingly similar struggles: fear, insecurity, pride, people-pleasing, indecision, and disobedience.

Saul admits, "I feared the people and obeyed their voice." Zedekiah repeatedly hears God's word through Jeremiah, yet fear of his circumstances and the people around him keeps him from acting decisively.

So what happens when fear becomes stronger than faith?
What happens when protecting our reputation becomes more important than obeying God?
And what happens when we are willing to hear God's truth but are unwilling to surrender to it?

Rather than simply labeling Saul and Zedekiah as "bad kings," we'll humanize their stories and examine the inner battles behind their outward failures.
