What does it actually mean to figure your life out while you’re still in the middle of living it?

Tongue Tied is a podcast about navigating your twenties through music, storytelling, and honest conversations about everything that comes with growing into yourself in real time. Hosted by Hope Phahla, this show lives in the in-between: the identity shifts, uncertainty, relationships, creative ambitions, cultural expectations, and all the moments that are somehow both exciting and deeply confusing at the exact same time. Told through the lens of a first-generation creative balancing ambition, identity, and adulthood, the podcast explores what it means to carve out your own path while still carrying the expectations, experiences, and perspectives that shaped you.

Because sometimes it’s hard to explain what you’re feeling. Sometimes you don’t fully know who you’re becoming yet. And sometimes all you can do is send someone a song and hope it says it for you.

At the center of the podcast is music — not just as background noise, but as emotional language. The songs tied to specific memories, the lyrics that somehow articulate exactly what you can’t, the albums that soundtrack entire versions of your life before you even realize they’re ending. Each episode uses music as a starting point to unpack the experiences, questions, and emotions that define this era of life.

Some episodes are more reflective, centered around themes like nostalgia, outgrowing people, identity, or starting over. Others are more conversational, diving into everything from internet culture and creative careers to friendships, and the weirdly universal experience of overthinking absolutely everything. Sometimes it’s solo, sometimes with guests, and sometimes it’s just figuring things out out loud in real time.

Tongue Tied is rooted in the idea that your twenties are full of contradictions: feeling lost and self-aware at the same time, constantly evolving while trying to stay grounded in who you are, wanting certainty while also learning how to sit with the unknown. It’s about trying to articulate yourself while you’re still becoming yourself.

There isn’t always a perfect conclusion here, and that’s kind of the point.

This podcast isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about saying things imperfectly, romanticizing life a little too hard, laughing at yourself when necessary, and learning how to trust who you’re becoming along the way.

Welcome to Tongue Tied.

In this episode of Tongue Tied, I’m talking about invisible timelines, social media, the pressure to have everything figured out in your twenties, progress over perfection, and why every decision somehow feels permanent when you’re 22. We get into comparison, uncertainty, and learning how to stop treating life like a race when realistically…most of us are just improvising. A little existential, a little comforting, and hopefully a reminder that you’re probably not as behind as you think you are.

A quick intro to Tongue Tied. I’m Hope, and this is basically a space where I talk through life in my twenties – music, identity, creative ambition, relationships, overthinking, and trying to figure out who you are while you’re still becoming her. I’m a first-gen creative navigating life and my career in real time, and a lot of this podcast is just honest conversations, storytelling, and using music to process the in-between moments that are sometimes hard to explain. Sometimes it’s solo, sometimes I’ll bring on friends or other creatives, but it’s all pretty unfiltered. Welcome to Tongue Tied :)
