概要

 A realtor shows Luna a house in the hill country of New Hampshire—a three-bedroom colonial on a dead-end road called Hemlock Lane. The listing says 'charming fixer-upper.' The front door opens inward, which is wrong. Inside, the wallpaper is fresh, the floors are sanded, but the kitchen clock ticks backward. The realtor's name is Diane, and she keeps touching the wall by the basement door like she's checking a pulse. The previous owner, a woman named Margaret Hollis, died in the master bedroom—cancer, they said—but the neighbors tell a different story about a locked root cellar and a sound like wet paper tearing. Luna walks through every room, and in the attic she finds a child's shoe, size four, with the lace still knotted. The realtor says there were no children. By the end, Luna is standing in the driveway at dusk, and she realizes the key she was given doesn't fit the front door.
