概要

 In the autumn of 2003, a woman named Clair Boudreaux disappeared from her trailer outside Pinhook, Missouri, leaving behind a locked bedroom door and a stain on the ceiling that pulsed with heat. Her teenage son Levi waited three days before calling anyone. When I talked to him, he told me about the shape he saw through the crack in the door — something that didn't have feet. Something that walked on stilts made of bone. This is a story about what lives under the bridges in that part of the state, and what happens when a child makes a promise to a thing that doesn't understand the word 'forever'. It's a cold, damp tale, and I still can't drive over a river at night without checking the rearview.
