概要

 In the summer of 2019, on a dead-end stretch of Route 11 in upstate New York, a neon diner sign kept falling, night after night. Just before three in the morning. Always pointing east. The owner, a man named Harlan, swore it wasn't wind or wear. He called me after the third night, voice cracked, saying the bolts weren't loose—the metal was warm to the touch. I drove out that August, past fields gone to goldenrod, and parked under the flicker of a dying streetlight. What I found inside that diner, under the hum of a fryer that hadn't been used in years, was a story about something that had been waiting for Harlan's family since 1947. A story about a handprint in the gravel, a name scratched into a refrigerator door, and the reason Cutter's Diner never served breakfast. This is what I saw. This is what followed me home.
