概要

In the summer of 2017, I spent a week on Topsail Island, North Carolina, cataloguing storm-washed artifacts for a marine biology volunteer group. Most days I found fishing floats and beer cans. But on the third morning, I found a piece of driftwood carved with symbols I couldn't read. I brought it back to the rental house. That night, I heard scratching at the door. Not from outside—from inside the driftwood. I called the old woman who lived year-round on the island, the one they called the Soundkeeper. She told me to bring it to her shack at the north end, past the inlet. I walked there at twilight, the wood thrumming in my hands like a second heartbeat. She took one look at the carvings and said I had three days to return it to the exact spot where I found it, or the tide would take something it had already claimed. I asked what that meant. She just pointed out the window at the dark water. I put the wood back on the beach that night, but I kept one photograph. The picture came out wrong—the symbols were blurry, but there was a face in the grain I hadn't seen before. I deleted the photo. I still hear the scratching some nights, soft and patient, like something waiting for me to come back.
