概要

 In the winter of 2019, on a frozen stretch of county road outside Duluth, Minnesota, I watched a man in a bellhop uniform knock on the door of a long-abandoned motel. The Lost Lake Motor Lodge had been closed since 1987, but every night at exactly 11:47 PM, the bellman arrived by foot from the treeline, crossed the salt-rutted parking lot, and rang the lobby bell. I was there to photograph the ruin for a preservation blog. I stayed three nights. On the third night, the door opened. This is what I saw inside the lobby, what the bellman said to me in the dark, and why I will never drive that road again — not even in daylight.
