概要

 In the autumn of 1922, Luna drove through the dying mill town of Marrow, Vermont, following a rumor about a lamplighter who never lit his lamps. She found a man named Elias Croft, who hadn't spoken in forty years — until she asked him about the whistling. What he told her, in a voice like dry leaves, was that every dusk the streetlamps along Elm Street began to hum a tune no one else could hear. He said the hum was a warning. He said the lamps were not for light. Luna stayed until the last lamp went dark, and she heard it too — a thin, reedy whistle threading through the frost. This is what happens when you listen to the things that were never meant to speak.
