At a sun-baked estate sale in Red Bluff, California, August of 2009, Luna picks up a ceramic figurine with a handwritten price tag that shouldn't make sense. The woman running the sale is hollow-eyed, chain-smoking Virginia Slims, and tells her the story of a farmhouse road, a truck that never turned off, and the thing that stepped out of the dry grass that night. What she describes — what she says she saw — doesn't match any animal Luna knows, and the price tag on the figurine is the part that keeps Luna awake.
