Born in 1946 in Heilbronn, Germany, to parents forced into Nazi slave labor, and raised in postwar communist Warsaw, Andrzej Seweryn's life reads like an epic film script. From his early training at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Warsaw to his imprisonment at age twenty-two for anti-communist activism, from his Silver Bear win at the Berlin Film Festival for "The Conductor" to his collaboration with director Andrzej Wajda on landmark Polish cinema, every chapter of this man's story is more astonishing than the last. After fleeing Poland in 1981 due to his support for the Solidarity movement, Seweryn built an extraordinary second career in France, becoming one of only three non-French actors in the entire history of the Comédie-Française to receive full membership. He portrayed Robespierre in "La Révolution française," appeared in Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List," taught at the Paris Conservatoire, and was awarded France's highest honor, the Légion d'honneur. After more than thirty years abroad, he returned to Poland, took the helm as director of the prestigious Polski Theatre in Warsaw, and continued delivering award-winning performances well into his seventies, including three best actor prizes for "The Last Family" and a Polish Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2023.
