概要

 South Dakota, late October, two in the morning. I stopped at a truck stop off I-90, just past the Wounded Knee exit. The clerk was a woman named Miriam, maybe seventy, with two hearing aids and a calm that felt older than the building. She told me about the man who comes through every Halloween week, always pays with a coin so worn the date is gone, always asks for a room key she doesn't have. She showed me the logbook — five years of the same entry, in the same handwriting: 'Arrived. Waiting.' When the door opened and no one came in, I understood why she never looks up from her crossword when she hears the bell. This is a story about a promise that outlasts its speaker, a road that only goes one way, and the kindness of pretending you didn't see.
