I met Gaby in Newcastle at the restaurant where we both work. She's always smiling and when she laughs I can hear her from the dining room! Over time, we became friends. She's a bit of a crazy woman, like all my friends—with character and a lot of determination.

Before embarking on a trip, introductions are in order!

In this episode, I'll introduce myself and share key moments in my life that have shaped the woman I am today.

I started with several observations:

• Travel has become a checklist
• We no longer take the time to connect with others
• Since the advent of social media, we've never been so alone, even though we feel connected to the entire world

I want to challenge all of this.

Going back to basics:

• Taking the time to build relationships
• Listening, learning, and being inspired by each other's life stories

Two years ago, I went to Bali.

Spoiler alert: I didn't really like it. It's too touristy for my taste.

One of my favorite moments was the sunrise over Mount Batur. It was really amazing! I was able to book this activity online through a specialized website.

But there was one activity that really bothered me: a tour of the island's Instagrammable spots! What the hell is that?!

Where have the encounters gone? The human connections?

Traveling isn't just about standing in line to take a picture of some Instagrammable spot that everyone else has already done.

I find this view sad and reductive, but unfortunately, it reflects the world we live in. Through this podcast, I'd like to offer a counterpoint to all of that: to take the time to build connections, to discover the wonders of this world.
