My father beat me with a leather strap. When he finished — I looked him in the eye and told him: "When I'm eighteen — I'm out of here. And you will never see me again."

He laughed. And walked away.

That laugh installed something in me that ran my life for decades. The abandonment wound — the conclusion that nobody cares whether you stay or go — and the vow that follows: "I'll leave before they leave me. Every time."
