I had to shut her out. Not because I didn't love her. Because something in me believed that if she got too close — she'd see what I really was. And she'd leave.

That conclusion wasn't about her. It was a wound installed in a boy long before he ever met her.

"I am not enough." "Closeness leads to pain." "If she really knew me — she'd leave."

That conclusion became the third person in our marriage.

She'd reach through — I'd pull back. She'd get close — I'd perform instead of connect. She'd need me — I'd disappear.

It wasn't her. It was never her.

You're not competing with another woman. You're competing with a wound he's been carrying since before he knew you.

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, I'm Bill — and this is The Warrior Medic.
It’s Wednesday again, and Wednesday is for the wives.
If your husband is distant — if he's present in the house but unreachable inside it — I want to tell you what's actually driving that distance.
It's not you.
It's a conclusion a boy drew decades before he ever met you.
Something happened to him. A father who raged at him, or who left. A father who was present in body but absent in every way that mattered.
And driven by that distance, the boy concluded something about himself.
"I am not enough."
"I am not worth staying for."
"Closeness leads to pain."
"If she really knew me — she'd leave."
That conclusion is the third person in your marriage.
It's why he can't openly receive your love — because he believes love has to be earned, and he's still trying to earn it.
It's why he performs at work but disappears at home — performance feels safer than connection.
It's why he withdraws when you need him most — closeness feels like exposure.
It's why your children feel his absence — even when he's sitting at the dinner table with them.
You're not competing with another woman.
You're competing with something much worse… your competing with a wound he's been carrying since before you knew him.
And here's what you need to hear:
His healing is possible. But it starts with understanding what's actually driving the distance.
